“And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been.”
Rainer Maria Rilke
Hey there Insighters, Happy New Year to each and every one of you! I hope the holiday season found jolly, drunk, and well-fed.
The time has come to kickstart the blogging year on an encouraging tone. Hence, we’ll be looking at 5 habits I encourage you to develop in this New Year.
But before we skydive right into the action:
(If you’re new to Introverted-Insight, it’s really awesome to have you here. And if you’re a returning reader, welcome back Insighter! I’m always grateful to have you in my Little Space To Be Creative.)
(By all means, enjoy today’s post and feel free to browse the site for more great content, including short-stories and musical commentary.)
Okay, now that the formalities are out of the way, let’s begin!
#1. Take The Risk
2020 marks not only the start of a New Year, it also ushers in a brand-new decade. And that’s pretty damn significant if you ask me.
Take a moment and think about where you want to be at the end of this decade.
No, let’s envision it together. It’s 2029, heading into 2030….
Damn, it’s 2029! I’ll be clocking 33 the following year! Hell, I may decide to something crazy, like have a kid, or worse…marriage. Woah. Okay, no more picturing the end of this decade – it’s too daunting.
My point is, if you want an enriched future in which you can truly be comfortable, then you must put in the work NOW! You need to take advantage of the myriad of opportunities the universe is offering you.
Now, this isn’t to say go out into the world and ruin your future by being reckless. Rather, I suggest that you push yourself more than before. Don’t sell yourself short.
Shoot your shot! You’ve nothing to lose and all to gain. A “no” here and there bestows humility, and a “yes” from the right source can change your life forever.
Therefore, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there – your art, your voice, your talent – take the damn risk!
#2. Support Others
2019 taught me that no man is an island. Additionally, it revealed to me that everybody needs a helping hand sometimes.
To clarify, when I say support others this New Year, I’m not giving you the green light to get used and drained. NO! I’m only encouraging you to help as best as you can, without it being a detriment to you in the long run.
For instance, something as simple as sharing or liking someone’s business page on Facebook. You’re already on your phone scrolling through memes and the latest tea, why not give someone a better chance at making a sale?
It takes nothing out of you and can really make a difference in someone else’s life. Similarly, comment some encouraging words under a post from one of your artist friends. Tell them you enjoy the work they’re doing and that they should continue to gift the world with their art.
Once again, it takes nothing out of you. Plus, it’s a refreshing pull away from all of the pointless negativity social media tends to breed. Your one, little gesture can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
It can be the thing that prevents them from calling it quits altogether. As a reminder, you don’t have to know someone personally to show them support. IJS – I’m just saying.
So gon’ head Insighters, show some support for your fellow human beings, you never know how your kindness will be reciprocated further down in the New Year.
#3. Take Breaks When Needed
Last year I got sick a record-breaking 3 times. That’s 3 times as much as my yearly quota. But it happened because my body wasn’t getting the proper rest and treatment it needed.
For some time, I found myself running my body as if I was some work-crazed robot. Although I take pleasure in being hardworking, I’ve learnt how to give myself breaks.
How to relax and avoid burnout. I’ve learnt that sometimes, a little nothing goes a mighty, long way.
Likewise, I’ve learnt that minimum breaks between working a 9-5, freelance writing, running a blog, and being a human adult is a recipe for disaster.
Hence Insighters, I admonish you to take your rest this new year. Allow yourself the chance to become rested, rejuvenated, and reborn. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself either sick, mentally gone, or swimming in Davie Jones’ locker.
So, take a step away from the work, pull-up some Netflix, read some blog posts, or just lie in bed. Do yourself a favor and learn to take it easy. Remember, we’re all human and we all have our limits.
#4. Actually Do The Work
Undoubtedly, with the turning tide of each New Year comes the rippling waves of resolutions, goals, and targets. And there’s nothing wrong with that. People want to better themselves; it’s to be expected.
However, do not make the same mistake as every year and just talk about the things you want to accomplish. Your wishful words mean nothing if they’re not backed by action, sacrifice, and self-discipline.
If all you’re doing is heating up the room talking about your plans, I suggest you zip it, get serious, start planning, and start executing.
Or if you’re like me, say a lot less, so you feel motivated to do that much more. We’ve been alive long enough to know that our dreams don’t work unless we do.
So please, go to the bloody gym, start that new business venture, save for that down-payment on your home, travel, go back to school, and for the love of literature WRITE THAT FUCKING BOOK!
(That last one was aimed directly at me by the way.)
#5. Believe In Yourself
Sure enough, 2020 is only going to be as great as you make it. Whether we want to stint this burst of New Year optimism with reality or not, dumb things will happen. Some setbacks, some betrayals, some sad days.
You will be placed in some uncomfortable situations and will be forced to look inward to see what is needed for you to survive. 2019 taught me that personally.
Nevertheless, you can and will survive the unforeseen hurdles on your race to glory. You are the activating power of the universe.
In you lies the innate ability to manifest the things you desire. Don’t limit yourself. Have some self-confidence. You’ve made it this far, right?
Final Thoughts
Insighters it’s 2020. This is the time to do your doanani do! In other words, it’s the time to take the risk, support others along the way, take the necessary breaks, actually do the work, and believe in the magic that is yourself!
I’m looking forward to an amazing blogging year and growing with each and every one of you. Exciting things are on the horizon for I-I, so by all means stay tuned.
As always, take care of yourselves. Put your health and needs first. And continue to be your best, unapologetic self. Love you guys!
